Physical Examination for Meniscus Tears
نویسندگان
چکیده
Meniscus injuries, both from athletic activities and activities of daily living, are a common reason of referral for orthopedic evaluation. With an annual incidence of approximately 61 per 100,000 individuals in the general population, meniscus tears are one of the most common injuries to the knee and should often be included at the top of the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with knee pain [ 1 ]. While imaging techniques are playing an increasingly important role in confi rming the diagnosis of meniscus injury, physicians must be capable of performing a thorough history and physical examination as it relates to the meniscus to determine when obtaining advanced imaging will be advantageous. This chapter will provide a review of the basic approach to the physical examination of the knee with a particular focus on the evaluation for meniscus tears.

Accuracy of MRI in Comparison with Arthroscopic Findings in the Diagnosis of Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Meniscus Tears
Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is of great aid in the diagnosis of knee lesions. Nevertheless, arthroscopy has remained the reference standard for the diagnosis of internal derangements of the knee, against which alternative diagnostic modalities should be compared. This study was designed to assess the value of MRI and clinical examination in the diagnosis of Anterior Cruciate Li...

Introduction & Objective: Rapidly progressing medical technology sometimes obscures the importance of physical examination. This study was designed to assess the value of clinical examination in the diagnosis of ligamentous and meniscal knee injuries in comparison with arthroscopic findings. Materials & Methods: Between 2006-2008 we conducted an observational study to assess intraarticular i...
متن کاملPopliteomeniscal fascicle tears.
Isolated popliteomeniscal fascicle tears are often unrecognized and misdiagnosed. Patients typically have vague symptoms and often-normal magnetic resonance imaging and physical examination findings. Isolated injuries are often misdiagnosed and mistreated, leading to delayed surgical treatment. Unrecognized tears can lead to continued disability, lateral meniscus tears, and chondral lesions. Ap...
متن کاملPopliteomeniscal fascicle tears causing symptomatic lateral compartment knee pain: diagnosis by the figure-4 test and treatment by open repair.
BACKGROUND Injuries to the popliteomeniscal fascicles of the lateral meniscus are difficult to identify from physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging scans. To our knowledge, there have been no described physical examination techniques to identify symptomatic isolated popliteomeniscal fascicle tears. The popliteomeniscal fascicles have been demonstrated to be important for lateral me...
متن کاملThe diagnosis of meniscus tears: the role of MRI and clinical examination.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical examination are tools commonly used in the diagnosis of meniscus tears. It has been suggested routine MRI before therapeutic arthroscopy for clinically diagnosed meniscus tears will reduce the number and cost of unnecessary invasive procedures. We designed a systematic review of prospective cohort studies comparing MRI and clinical examination to ar...
